To update and modernise his living room, whilst still maintaining his vintage and industrial furniture. My client has a love for reading, and so did not want a TV in this room. He wanted a space where he could sit in the daytime and read books and drink coffee, but also a space that he could welcome friends back to in the evening. Originally my client wanted a dark blue living room, however due to the size of the room and orientation of the sun I recommended a stone coloured room with accents of more uplifting colours such a orange, yellow and green.

To make the room feel more spacious I designed built in cabinetry with uplighting in the shelves. The doors were sliding rather than hinging to maximise the floor space. I added a space underneath for log storage so that the logs could be used as a display piece as well as for the fire. I re-positoned the sofa opposite the window to maximise the view outside, and repositioned the radiator behind the front door so to maximise the useable wall space.

As the room was to be used for reading, it was important to consider the light levels and offer my client lighting that was dimmable and positioned in different areas of the room so it created mood lighting in the evening. The flooring in the kitchen and living room where originally two different materials and colours, and so it was important to me that we used one type of flooring throughout the level it through so the rooms connected from a design point of view.
